Celebrate Indigenous art, design and culture at the National Indigenous Art Fair (NIAF). Now in its fifth year, this iconic ethical marketplace will showcase creations from remote and local First Nations artists, designers and makers from across Australia on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June on Gadigal Land at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in The Rocks, Sydney.
NIAF offers a unique opportunity to buy artworks, textiles, handmade jewellery, ceramics, and artefacts directly from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists in remote community-owned art centres in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and regional New South Wales with over fifty stallholders on display. All proceeds from purchases at the Fair go directly back to the artist and First Nations communities.
The 2024 program includes live music performances, dance, cultural displays, interactive weaving circles, and workshops for all ages.
Participate in an ochre painting workshop where you can learn traditional painting techniques and history with Kunwinjku artists from Injalak Arts Centre, West Arnhem Land, or a weaving workshop with Regina Wilson, master fibre weaver from Durrmu Arts in Peppimenarti, using merrepen (sand palm) which are hand harvested and traditionally dyed. Children’s activities include Torres Strait Island dance and song workshops, sand painting workshops (Walangari), and a chance to craft their own wearable possum armband.
A new installation, The Living Room, is a show room dedicated to exhibiting First Nations’ designed furniture, textiles, fabrics and homewares, available for purchase. Curated by Indigenous Australian actress Miah Madden, this special space celebrates the extension of Indigenous art from the gallery wall to the walls of our living room and wearable artwork of fashion.
