‘Unravel’ is a poetic response to the uncertainties of our time, as well as a personal reflection of memories of home, belonging and displacement. The centerpiece is a sculpture in the form of an anchor. This work, Between Certainties, deals with elements of opposition. An anchor represents security and safety: to be anchored. However, this sculpture is covered in checkered plastic, the type that is associated with cheap carry-all bags, evocative of poverty and mobility.
The drawings are based on specific knots and are accompanied by quotes from The Ashley Book of Knots. This provides both a description of the knot as well as a way of reading a symbolic meaning into the work. The artworks can operate as metaphors for personal relationships or emotional states, for example, strangle knot, true lovers knot, false lovers knot, and to untangle a snarl. This body of work continues Martini’s interest in ideas of belonging, loss, displacement, migration, travel and home.
