Western Victorian, Kirrae Whurrung songman, artist, carver and composer, Brett Clarke presents Ngakee Wanga Toompa at the Warrnambool Art Gallery, Victoria. The exhibition continues the artist’s expression of his spiritual connection to country – one that moves beyond an artwork, and into advocacy for the protection and preservation of the land, its inhabitants, and its waterways.
Clarke employs pyrography and carving of found wood; inscribing symbols to relay ancient stories. While, under the pseudonym Boorook, his sound installations and compositions feature language and truth-telling, combined with solfeggio frequencies, to create a sense of calm and inspire healing within its listeners. Often accompanied by self-produced music videos, his songs delve into personal places and themes that resonate with him.
Ngakee Wanga Toompa reveals the artist’s multidisciplinary approach of visual and sound-based media, inviting audiences to be immersed, practice deep listening, and discover more about the landscape around us.
