Dandenong will be lit up in June with a series of temporary art projects designed to delight, engage and inspire.
Now in its eighth year, ‘Nocturnal’ brings Dandenong’s laneways, car parks and hidden nooks and crannies to life, while also profiling the cutting edge work of established and aspiring artists.
From 3 to 13 June the work of 20 artists, including students from RMIT and Chisholm Institute, will add colour, life and vibrancy to a suburb already known for its diversity. The series of light-based artworks will be attached to buildings in some of the least expected places.
Keeping with tradition, torch lit guided night walks will also be held on 4, 5, 11 and 12 June. This fantastic family event allows people to encounter first hand art projects, light works, building projections and performances.
Experienced tour guides will lead you to some of Dandenong’s most intriguing spaces where temporary artworks alter the sense of place and environment. The new outdoor civic space will provide a warm starting point for the night walks with short films showing on the big screen and hot soup also on offer. ‘Nocturnal Night Walks’ will be held Wednesday 4 and 11 June and Thursday 5 and 12 starting at 6pm – bookings essential.
Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said up to 20 installations, performances and light projects will fill the streets, laneways, shopfronts and car parks of Dandenong. “Essentially Nocturnal is all about creating outdoor gallery spaces in places you would least expect them,” Cr Memeti said, “It is a great opportunity to explore hidden pockets of the city rarely encountered by the public and to see Dandenong after dark.”
