Yayoi Kusama: THE SPIRITS OF THE PUMPKINS DESCENDED INTO THE HEAVENS

Yayoi Kusama’s practice engages with various media and an expansive idea of perception, space, and the human body while using distinctive, recurring motifs to investigate the aesthetics of accumulation and obsession.

In this National Gallery of Australia touring exhibition, Kusama invites us to participate in an experience of both claustrophobic and infinite space, and a round trip from the microscopic into the cosmic via a bright yellow room overrun with black polka-dots and illuminated pumpkin sculptures, and a “peep-show” mirror box camouflaged by the reflections of its surrounding environment.
