August is all about art in South Australia. It sees the eighteenth ‘SALA Festival’ with a huge 5,205 participating artists in 610 exhibitions and events, roll in to town. SALA celebrates and promotes the diversity of talents of South Australian Living Artists. An open access arts festival, it showcases thousands of artists by collaborating with exhibition spaces throughout metropolitan and regional South Australia.
There are a huge number of artists working across a range of mediums – ceramicists, glass artists, painters, photographers, textile artists, sculptors and more, exhibitions and events across the state. To help navigate the huge size of the festival, SALA have arranged expert guides for attendees to get the best out of the program. These unique tours, led by South Australian artists, also include regional tours so that festival go-ers can discover art in South Australia’s terrific wine regions and beyond.
A highlight of the festival is the one-to-one nature of meeting local artists and exploring their working space during the Open Studio weekend, 8-9 August. For foodies, mark down Sunday 16 August for SALA Gala in the Garden in Unley. It showcases South Australian art with artists in action, art books, art demonstrations, children’s art workshops plus superb local food and wine.
There are also artist talks and panel discussions, The Artists’ Voice, on Saturday & Sunday 22-23 August as well as exhibitions by artists-in-residence at SAHMRI, Adelaide Festival Centre, Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide Central Market and Centennial Park.
