This exhibition presents two photographic series, which were created simultaneously throughout the 2012-13: group portraits and panoramic landscapes.
Symons creates portraits with multiple personas, exposing the ‘self’ as the product of social and interior interaction. Emotionally powerful, the portraits show frozen moments in sequence. Where the portraits look at human psychology, her panoramic photographs borrow from the traditions of landscape painting. They are devoid of human existence but for the traces of humanity such as the empty buildings and abandoned machinery on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour.
