Susan Baird: Sense of Place

‘Sense of Place’ by Susan Baird is an exhibition of a new series of personal paintings that pay homage to the landscape, friends that share these places and stories the landscapes hold. Many of the subjects in the works are places that Baird has visited from Hill End to Tasmania during different seasons from friends’ houses and through various residencies she has been part of, most recently being Bruny Island.

Baird says, “Engaging with landscape gives me an internal compass and through painting, particularly en plein air, one is physically forced to slow down and be present as time unfolds.” Vibrant strokes of colour, swift brushwork and suggested forms conjure an ‘optic memory’, evoking sensations of form, shape, light and colour experienced in the field.
