Black is the constant element in ‘All things being equal’, an exhibition of new monochromatic work by Suzie Idiens. In her hands black is not simply a colour; it is a substance – and a variable one at that.
Whether an object’s finish is high-gloss, matt or textured, it is applied though a painstaking process in which the hand disguises its own trace. Each object is seamless, like that of an industrially fabricated form. All the while, these objects of precision are each unique and deliberately tactile, carefully individuated and receptive to the observer’s contemplation.
