The Female Gaze features self-portraits and portraits of women by women artists: Natasha Bieniek, Joanna Braithwaite, Lucy Culliton, Julie Fragar, Petrina Hicks, Margaret Olley, Jude Rae, Jenny Sages, and Anne Zahalka, drawn from the Tweed Regional Gallery collection.
Spinning feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey’s concept of the male gaze, the exhibition poses thoughts on the way women portray female subjects with an aim to subvert the male perspective seen throughout art history, making space for female artists and allowing them authorship over their own stories and representation.
