This is The Hughes Gallery’s first exhibition of American artist Thornton Dial. Dial, a Southern Vernacular artist based in Alabama, uses sculpture, relief painting and drawing to explore issues such as politics, the economy, women and natural disasters. His work has been exhibited widely across the USA and will soon be exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
‘His Southern Stories’ is composed of 23 works on paper. These drawings serve as a navigable bridge between the free heart that creates them and the viewer who might find the three-dimensional work difficult to access or interpret. His drawings are narrative, some are erotic, and others tell stories about hard times past and present.
