QUT holds a distinguished collection of works from the Kimberley region, including those by artists such as Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie, Jarinyanu David Downs, Shirley Purdie, Lily Karadada and Eubena Nampitjin. Showcasing these pieces alongside art from Western Australian Indigenous communities and private collections, this exhibition surveys a new generation of artists and celebrates the distinct artistic styles and subject matter of this intriguing and vibrant region.
From the subdued ochre landscapes from Turkey Creek, the bold, acrylic paintings from Balgo Hills and the gestural work of Fitzroy Crossing, these contemporary works are as unique and disparate as the remote communities that they have come from. Materials range from natural pigment ochres to acrylic paint, and works both embrace and adapt traditional subjects.
