Boomalli Artists dominate the 2014 Parliament of NSW Aboriginal Art Prize

Congratulations to the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative who represent almost one-third of the finalists announced for the 2014 Parliament of New South Wales Aboriginal Art Prize (PNSWAAP).

Out of the 36 finalists, here are Boomalli Member Artists: Adam Hill, Graham Toomey, Leonie Binge, Lola Binge, Luke Close, Nicole Monks, Joe Hurst, Sharon Smith, Stella O’Halloran, Thelma Bartman, and Gordon Syron.

‘Boomalli’ a word from three different language groups – Gamileroi, Bundjalung and Wiradjuri – meaning to make a mark; to strike. It is through this philosophy that Boomalli continues to make its mark within the wider arts community.

Boomalli artists are creative people who are stretching boundaries, producing cutting edge art, challenging stereotypes and where necessary, being controversial. Their works illustrate the complexity and diversity of black cultural life and provide an opportunity for the wider community to participate in contemporary Indigenous cultural expression. Mediums of art practice include painting, print-making, photography, new media, sculpture, fabric design and mixed media.

Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative invite you to their gallery to view ‘The River Tells Many Stories’, an amazing show featuring two of the Parliament of NSW Aboriginal Art Prize finalists, Thelma Bartman and Stella O’ Halloran.

PNSWAAP is an annual acquisitive art award, with the prize money totalling $40,000, presented to an Aboriginal visual artist over the age of 18, born in New South Wales or living in New South Wales.

The prize celebrates and recognises the high standard of art produced by Aboriginal artists within NSW. It showcases the extraordinary achievements of the artists, reflecting contemporary practice as well as traditional forms of storytelling.
