Joseph McGlennon has won the 2015 William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize with his work, Florilegium #1. An initiative of the Monash Gallery of Art Foundation, the non-acquisitive prize was established in 2006 to promote excellence in photography and sees the winner receiving a $25,000 cash prize.

With over 2,600 entries, this year’s guest judges – renowned Australian artist Bill Henson and Bendigo Art Gallery Director Karen Quinlan, alongside MGA Senior Curator Stephen Zagala – had their work cut out for them. Quinlan says they decided on McGlennon’s piece because, “For me, it’s the most powerful work in the show. It is exotic, mysterious and has an exciting presence within the exhibition.”

Fellow judge Henon says, “This picture contains worlds. It suggests the history of the relationship between the human imagination and the natural order of the world around us. The work has an almost anonymous perfection that reinforces the fact that culture is never outside nature.”

McGlennon’s Florilegium #1 was photographed in Madagascar, Tahiti and Singapore pieced together to create a Florilegium landscape straight from the Age of Enlightenment.

Peter Campbell, Valerie Sparks and Daniell Shipp received honrourable mentions. The finalists’ and winner’s work form an exhibition on from Friday 25 September to Sunday 22 November 2015.
