Casula Powerhouse comes of age!

“Pah-ty, pah-ty, pah-ty” – Janine; Muriel’s Wedding, Miramax Films (1994).

In 1994 Muriel Heslop comes of age, discovers life is as good as an Abba song and says goodbye to Porpoise Spit. 1994 also saw the opening of a new arts centre in Western Sydney, a place that was seeing great change.

Now regarded as one of Australia’s leading arts centres, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre (CPAC) is an artistic hub that presents an exceptional program of exhibitions and culturally diverse programs.

This October CPAC has come of age and celebrates twenty-one years with a birthday bash, titled Party Party Party, curated by Western Sydney-based artist David Capra, on Saturday 17 October.

‘Will there be cake?’, you ask. Of course! The free-to-the-public artist party will also feature a ‘90s dance party, a variety show, a bush doof and a ‘colourpult’. Artists taking part are Paulini, Justene Williams, William Yang, Regina Walters, Sarah Goffman, The Motel Sisters, Naomi Oliver, Renny Kodgers, Kate Blackmore, Rosie Deacon, and Lisa and Carla Wherby.

The soiree also marks the opening of ‘21’, an exhibition curated by Tony Bailey. Twenty-one contemporary artists – both promising local emerging artists and highly respected Australian artists who have shown at CPAC in its formative years – will present new and existing works. ‘21’ reflects on the great careers of these artists as well as looking toward the future of the arts in Western Sydney.

Exhibiting artists include: Gordon Bennett, Vivienne Burns, Daniel Boyd, David Capra, Peter Cooley, Rosie Deacon, Christine Dean, Mikala Dwyer, Fiona Foley, Franck Gohier, Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro, Deborah Kelly, Richard Larter, Dani Marti, Angelica Mesiti, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, Raquel Ormella, Khaled Sabsabi, Gina Sinozich, Savanhdary Vongpoothorn and Judy Watson.

Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre Director Kiersten Fishburn comments: “As the principal artistic centre for South West Sydney, Casula Powerhouse is committed to presenting the best contemporary arts practice within the context of the cultural diversity of our region.  It is wonderful to welcome back so many of the artists that exhibited here early in their careers, many involved from the very beginning.  Casula Powerhouse draws on the strengths of its community to make work that speaks to people everywhere and over 21 years we are proud to be a key player in the vibrant artistic scene in Western Sydney.

Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun adds: “Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre has embedded its reputation as a leading arts institution. Situated in one of Australia’s most multicultural communities, Casula Powerhouse has consistently offered artistic excellence and culturally diverse programs.  We wish Casula Powerhouse a happy 21st and welcome back to our region many of the artists that exhibited here early in their careers together with those who continually return to share their practice with the community.”
