Now in its 27th year, the City of Hobart Art Prize is an annual acquisitive award bringing together the best of contemporary visual arts, craft and design practice Australia-wide.

The 2015 Art Prize presents a broad survey contemporary art exhibition of 56 contemporary artworks, selected from over 250 entries from across the nation vying for one of two $15,000 acquisitive awards.

At the launch of the finalists’ exhibition on Thursday the 17th September at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, this year’s $15,000 acquisitive award recipients were announced with Adelaide-based artist Kirsten Coelho in the ceramics category for her work entitled, What we thought we needed, and Hobart-based artist Cameron McRae for drawing with his work entitled, Donk, Trip, Smack.

The Acting Lord Mayor of Hobart, Alderman Ron Christie said:

“The City’s commitment to the Art Prize since 1988 has put Tasmanian art on the national stage and the prize continues to be an opportunity to celebrate visual art, craft and design practice.

“It is always gratifying to see how well Tasmanian artists measure up nationally. This year 17 locals made the cut, which is a great performance and to see 24 year old Cameron McRae win this year is especially encouraging for the arts in this State.”

The winning artists’ work in each section was selected by an esteemed panel of judges Dr Patsy Hely, Emeritus Fellow, School of Art, Australian National University and notable ceramic artist; Peter Hughes, Senior Curator (Decorative Arts), Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and Julie Robinson, Senior Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs, Art Gallery of South Australia.

Highly Commended prizes were awarded to Jia Jia Ji Chen and Helen Fuller for Ceramics, and Matt Coyle and Matthew Vaughan for Drawing.

Visitors will be able to vote in the non-acquisitive People’s Choice Prize, which awards a cash prize of $1000 to the artist with the most popular work in the exhibition. A voter will win a $100 gift voucher courtesy of the City of Hobart following the close of the exhibition.
