Jimmy Tjapangarti Tchooga

These new works on paper by Jimmy Tjapangarti Tchooga, a Warlpiri/Ngarti man from Wirrimanu (Balgo) in the Tanami Desert, grow directly from the artist’s engagement with the Birrundudu Drawings – 810 crayon drawings made in 1945 by sixteen Aboriginal men on a remote NT cattle station; hidden, until recently, for eighty years.

Working as a cultural adviser on the project, the artist was moved to create his own suite of drawings tracing the songline journey of the Luurnpa, the Kingfisher ancestor of the Wirrimanu region.
