The ‘2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Monster Theatres‘ curated by Leigh Robb came to a close with roaring success. The event showcased works by artists Abdul Abdullah, Polly Borland, Erin Coates & Anna Nazzari, Julian Day, Brent Harris, Aldo Iacobelli, David Noonan, Mike Parr, Stelarc, Kynan Tan, Mark Valenzuela, Willoh S. Weiland and Judith Wright; in line with the theme and title, Monster Theatres. In what Robb calls ‘an arena of speculation, a circus of the unorthodox and the absurd, a shadow play between truth and fiction,’ the 2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art’ left the audience wanting an encore.
On Monday 10 August, the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) announced the production of the Adelaide Biennial’s next instalment, announcing the appointment of Sebastian Goldspink as curator for its 2022 iteration.
A proud descendant of the Burramattagal people of Western Sydney, Sebastian Goldspink is an independent curator and creative producer at the National Art School, and founder of ALASKA Projects which has showcased 500 artists across 150 exhibitions. He has also curated exhibitions nationally throughout Australia and internationally in London, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Christchurch.
Goldspink says, ‘The appointment is equal parts humbling and exciting. I relish the platform to bring stories to people and to share artists’ vision and work. The opportunity to be able to work with the AGSA team on a platform of this scale, scope and history of the Adelaide Biennial is a privilege.’
