For thirty-five years the work of Sydney-based artist Charlie Sheard has developed into a language of pure lyrical abstraction. Curated by Terence Maloon, this survey exhibition showcases the artist’s work over the last ten years.
With colour as the main subject, vibrant reds, blues, purples and pinks float across the canvas creating layers of shifting shapes. These compositions are the result of Sheard’s intense thought process and methodical technique. A number of these works have taken years to reach their definitive form. His practice draws on Surrealist Abstraction, Romanticism, Symbolism, Abstract Expressionism and the esotericism of Theosophy to produce a contemporary abstract vernacular.
