David Griggs lives and works in Manila, Philippines, a city with a population equal to all of Australia. His current exhibition ‘The Yum Yuck Hippy Paintings’ is an overdose of pathos and humour. His paintings are composed of dirty yucky tertiary colours alongside yummy high key pinks and oranges that slide into abstraction before pulling back with a simple gesture of a cigarette, Marty Feldman eyes, the odd General MacArthur reference or an ‘affectionate’ Freddy Kruger.
These exuberant paintings hold nothing back. For all of his projects, Griggs writes a list of notes, which he uses as a guide to help him remember his original ideas. Some of the key word notes for this series includes Freddy Krueger, tie-dye, abstract and mess.
