Dominik Mersch Gallery Award

The Dominik Mersch Gallery Award, now approaching its fifth year, is an annual award in collaboration with the University of Sydney’s Sydney College of the Arts. As part of the award, Dominik Mersch Gallery provides an exhibition space in the gallery to show one or more artists from Sydney College of the Arts. The 2012 recipient, Kevin Platt, was selected from SCA’s 2011 annual end of year Postgraduate Degree Show. Past recipients of the award include Locust Jones, Lucas Davidson, Andrew Newman and Tom Jefferson.

“Offering an exhibition space to show their works is the best way to support young and promising artists. According to best practice in Europe and the USA, such awards are very important to give young artists a head start”, says Dominik Mersch.

Of the collaboration, SCA Dean, Professor Colin Rhodes says “it gives an opportunity for one of our best graduates to reach a wide, appreciative audience”. Additionally, the award gives the winner the opportunity to present work in the professional context of a high-end commercial space as well as being surrounded by a solid and experienced stable of practicing artists – invaluable experience for any emerging professional.

2012 recipient, Kevin Platt says “The Dominik Mersch Gallery Award is an overwhelming offer. I am deeply grateful and excited about being afforded the chance to work with such a respected gallery”. As such, it is with anticipation that the 2013 recipient will be selected from the crop of graduating students from the SCA Class of 2012. The exhibition will take place early in the year, details of which will be available on the News page of Art Almanac’s website.
