First Amongst Equals (Part II)

First Amongst Equals brings together a group of Australian and international artists for the second time, featuring works inspired by film, kinetics, colour, sound and time. Collectively, their practices reflect influences from 1936 to 2012, resulting in a series of diverse, yet interconnected works. UK artist Elizabeth McAlpine’s work explores light and time in relation to film, with a double Super 8 projection, a plaster cast gramophone, pinhole camera photographs,  and sculptures, found postcards, and a flickering installation of 180 printed shadows. Kinetic works by Rebecca Baumann (WA), Len Lye (NZ), Christian Marclay (Switzerland/USA) and Paul Pfeiffer (USA) interact within the context of Baumann’s ‘Colour Environment.’ PICA curator Leigh Robb says, “With practices spanning from 1936 to 2012 this exhibition creates kaleidoscopic duets of colour, light, movement and sound.”
