Gabriella Hirst: Force Majeure

‘Force Majeure’ presents a compelling video installation by Sydney-born artist Gabriella Hirst currently living in Berlin, exploring landscape, atmosphere and weather. The artist embarked on a six-month project on the Island of Rügen, northern Germany where 19th-century Romantic landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich once worked. Challenged by the circumstances of difficult weather she filmed her attempts at painting a representational seascape, while enduring
the conditions, trying to eliminate the buffer zone between the destructive force and the creative act.
