2014 Gold Coast Art Prize Finalists announced

More than 300 entries were received for this year’s ‘Gold Coast Art Prize’ with entrants competing for a total prize pool of $30,000 in acquisitions. Forty-four Australian artists have been selected as finalists and will have their work exhibited at Gold Coast City Gallery with the winner announced at the exhibition opening event on 6 December.

The selected works represent many of the key trends in contemporary art such as urban life, landscape and environment, digital technologies and globalism.

Guest judge Dr Chris McAuliffe said that the finalists come from an incredibly diverse field, with known and unfamiliar, established and emerging, traditional and experimental artists represented.

“I tried to connect with what each artist was pursuing; an idea, an emotion, a challenge or perhaps just the satisfaction of knowing that their piece ‘works,”’ said Dr McAuliffe.

“Australian artists are internationally connected but still speak strongly of their experience of place, with many works being in response to the pace and complexity of urban life.”

“What I think is common to all the shortlisted artists is a determination to develop their voice, to approach their art with rigour and commitment, and to share their vision with whoever cares to judge their efforts,” said Dr McAuliffe.

The Gold Coast Art Prize is now in it’s 46th year and is open to all Australian artists working in any media except photography.
