Judy Watson: the holes in the land

Judy Watson’s latest exhibition was born out of an artistic fellowship at the British Museum. There she worked on ‘Engaging Objects’, a research project on Aboriginal cultural material held in the British Museum’s collections since the 19th and early 20th century.

From drawings made during her research, Watson produced six etchings, ‘the holes in the land’. The etchings feature items like a pituri bag (to hold a wood ash and leave mixture, that when chewed acted as a drug/stimulant), a wooden club from Moreton Bay, an apron from the Mara Tribe, and act as a reminder of the holes they represent for Aboriginal culture.
