Julian Hooper

Auckland-based artist Julian Hooper returns to Sydney for his fifth solo show at Gallery 9. Hooper’s painting process is an open ended one that gives form to an abstracted mode of figuration. He conceals as much as he reveals, flaunting particular references while sustaining an overall ambiguity. Tension and intrigue underscore each work.

Julian Hooper has exhibited extensively since 1990. In addition to curated group shows in Australia and New Zealand, Hooper has held over twenty solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and New York. His work is currently on display in’Necessary Distraction’, a survey of contemporary New Zealand painting at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki.
