In her largest and most ambitious undertaking to date, Justene Williams uses found objects and waste materials to construct theatrical ecosystems – hypnotising sets and performative video installations – creating a space of seduction, curiosity and complicit spectatorship.
Taking inspiration from her childhood, Williams has weaved the detritus of Western Sydney suburbia (the garage, an inflatable pool, a BBQ and a pile of televisions) into materials inspired by early 20th century avant-garde art and theatre, ritualistic practices, as well as contemporary pop culture, including hip-hop and Milli Vanilli.
