‘The Strange Familiar’, by Kathy Allam explores a world of mesmerising, coloured light and shimmering, ethereal forms. More than 10,000 recycled, plastic bottles have been transformed into an immersive installation that consumes the ARTLAAB gallery.
Wall pieces seem to expand, their curved bases create multiple light-reflecting facets, obscuring our vision. As individual units dissolve into a larger form the audience becomes microscopic, disproportioned by the large billowing sculptures. Unable to be contained, smaller bottles escape into the street, affixing to light poles and awnings – a statement on the long-term accumulation of this man-made material and its detrimental impact on the environment.
