Kawita Vatanajyankur: Performing Textiles

The Spinning Wheel (2018) and Knit (2019) by Thai-Australian artist Kawita Vatanajyankur are on view in ‘Performing Textiles’. The works critique the affect of contemporary manufacturing industries on workers, in particular the hardship faced by Thai women. The video works are colourful expressions of durational performance, with the artist using her body like a machine enacting a sense of disquiet and encircling issues of consumerism, feminism and social justice and as the gallery notes, the ‘vulnerabilities of the human body and its spirit.’
