With writing in English, Portuguese and Chinese, and artworks that speak a language of their own, this nuanced title began as a collaboration between artist John Young and poet Brian Castro on the transcultural history of Macau. The duo (with contributions from Edward Colless and Paul Carter) express the mélange and magic that the place possessed before the advent of casinos. As such the book, which was also an exhibition, is steeped in the past and present with sensuous storytelling that focuses on food, poetry and image.
