Edited by Rebecca Hawcroft

‘The Other Moderns’ chronicles the émigré designers, photographers, architects and manufacturers from Europe who brought Modernism to Australia during the 1930s and 60s. The aesthetics and philosophy of which shaped our suburbs and cities during the post war building boom and the introduction of the high-rise. Among the highly skilled craftspeople, several established the multi-national building companies of today such as Lend Lease, Stockland, Meriton and others. Profiling notable architects including Henry Epstein and Hugo Stossel and their contemporaries and illustrated with photographic imagery of furniture, interiors and facades from suburban houses and city dwellings to office buildings, we see how the modernist style and its proponents broke new ground in Australia.
