Forty-one finalists announced for National Photographic Portrait Prize 2018

The National Portrait Gallery has revealed the 41 finalists and 43 images for the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2018. The judging panel, comprising the gallery’s senior curator Christopher Chapman, contemporary photographer Petrina Hicks and curator from the Art Gallery of Western Australia Robert Cooke, were responsible for assessing over 3000 entries.

The 2018 finalists include: Michele Aboud, Scott Anthony Andrews, Lara Del Arte, Zia Atahi, Julia Ann Cameron, Brett Canet-Gibson, Timothy James Coad, Eva Collins, Harold David Combs, Adrian Cook, Tamara Dean, Alex Ellinghausen, Adam Ferguson, Tiffany Jane Garvie, Bill Gekas, Saleheh Gholami, Douglas Philip Gimesy, Lee Grant, Holly Granville-Edge, Gary Grealy, Rhett Hammerton, James Horan, Lyndal Irons, Dianne Jones, Kristyn Jones, Dave Laslett, Stuart Miller, Emma Phillips, Joel Brian Pratley, David Prichard, Filomena Rizzo, David Rosetzky, Laura Sikes, Stephanie Simcox, Anna Sinclair, Hugh Snelgrove, Renée Stamatova, Jacqui Stockdale, George Voulgaropoulos, Marzena Wasikowska, Nicole Katherine Wells.

The works provide insights into the minds of Australian portrait photographers and capture diverse subjects, from animal lovers and shooters to doubting nuns and those who have experienced major life struggles.

‘Viewers can expect to see photographic portraits that depict people who are calm, strong and authentic,’ explains Chapman.

The judges will announce the names of the winners for the $30,000 National Photographic Portrait Prize 2018 and the Highly Commended category on the evening of Friday 23 March. The Art Handler’s Award will be announced on Tuesday 20 March while the People’s Choice will be revealed in the week of 4 June.
