Peta Tranquille is a cartographic artist whose career in mapping spans across 30 years. In her latest solo exhibition ‘Urban Tropes’ on at Art at St Francis’ in Melbourne, Tranquille presents a vibrant display of works, as part of her ongoing project of mapping Melbourne whereby she utilises Google Maps to search for aerial views of geographic locations, specifically those that display interesting shapes and designs. The locations that Tranquille sets her sights on are polymerised with colour and precision to create an abstract version of the areas she has chosen to depict.

‘Colour, as well as my 30-year cartographic career, have played an important role in my inspiration. These two elements have been opportunely blended, showing Melbourne observed in a way you’ve never seen before,’ says Tranquille.
On viewing the show the audience are invited to search Google Maps by using the title of the works to see if they can find the exact locations that are re-imagined in Tranquille’s representations.
