Sally Stokes: Lures of Landscape

The mystery and intrigue of the Australian landscape are a driving force behind the paintings of Sally Stokes. With its quirky shapes of coastal rock platforms and fluidity of light and water, the patterns of burnt-out trees in high country and craggy sandstone cliffs feed the brush strokes and undulating lines of her organic pictures.

“Landscapes have their own energy”, says Stokes; “they are always in a state of flux – the seasons, the day and the night, the changing climate. There is the push and pull of spaces moving as perception changes, evoking a sense of place and the exuberance of unexpected colour relationships. The paintings nourish and sustain. They are alive.”
