Contemporary Melbourne artist Setken presents his first exhibition in five years, titled Adventures in Zoomorphic Idolatry, which comprises fourteen paintings, including unseen works, alongside screenings of Setken’s films.
Setken is drawn to the ancient, particularly Egyptian gods and goddesses and related themes, as animal-inspired bodies define his artmaking and are evident throughout many of his works. Setken’s aesthetic penchant for zoomorphism transcends the disciplinary boundaries of early art and design, religion and the sacred. By combining traditional imagery with a modern focus, this artist, in his own words, seeks to “go beyond the confines of what religion may be/is, to that numinous dimension that is embracing, threatening, welcoming, hostile and mysterious.”
Adventures in Zoomorphic Idolatry is on view at Dollhouse Gallery in Brunswick East, Melbourne. Setken will be speaking on Saturday 15 July, at 2pm on the reading of the hieroglyphs in the exhibition paintings and at 2.15pm on a monumental Egyptian tomb in Melbourne.
