Suzie Idiens: Counterpoint

Suzie Idiens continues to push the boundaries of artistic representation with Counterpoint, which will open on October 10 at Gallery9. The works were conceived through a series of sketches drawn in March 2010, following an exhibition with the Sydney Non-Objective; entitled Precursor. Idiems departs from her standard palette in this series, opting for bright pastels in lieu of her previously bold, opaque scheme. Boldness, however, is retained in these works, through the pairing of two individually coloured panels with asymmetrical proportion, achieving harmony through tension.

With regards to her approach to finish, Idiens says; “the high gloss polyurethane pursues an all but elusive ‘perfect’ finish and disguises [my] hand in the making of the pieces… The surface reflection acts an interface, giving resonance and luminosity to the colours while they mirror their surroundings, making the observer aware of their own presence. This sense of audience awareness is integral to the work.”
