‘Sydney Contemporary’ – Australia’s newest art fair – returns to Sydney’s Carriageworks in September for its second iteration and will showcase art from over 75 galleries across Australia, New Zealand and overseas.
On-shore highlights include solo exhibitions by Karen Black at Sydney’s Sullivan+Strumpf, Jake Walker at Gallery 9 and Natasha Bieniek at Melbourne’s This Is No Fantasy + Dianne Tanzer Gallery. Adelaide’s Hugo Michell Gallery will feature work from Trent Parke, Tony Garifalakis and Lucas Grogan, while Melbourne’s Alcaston Gallery will showcase work by contemporary and Indigenous artists including Greg Semu, Nonggirrnga Marawili and the late Sally Gabori. Work by Ildiko Kovacs, the 2015 Bulgari Art Award winner, will be presented at Martin Browne Contemporary alongside works by Fiona Lowry, Baden Pailthorpe, Alexander McKenzie and Troy Emery.
Wellington’s Suite Gallery will present a solo show of works by Wayne Youle, profiled in the current issue of Art Collector, while Auckland’s Two Rooms will exhibit German artist Joachim Bandau and New Zealand’s Boyd Webb. Auckland gallery Gow Langsford’s group exhibition features works by Dale Frank, Gordon Walters, John Pule and Judy Millar, to name a few.
International galleries make up over 30 per cent of the exhibiting contingent, presenting work from China, Japan, Singapore, Chile, the United Kingdom and United States. Pearl Lam Galleries returns to Australia after attending the 2014 Melbourne Art Fair, exhibiting Zhu Jinshi, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Su Xiaobai, Qin Yufen and Joana Vasconcelos. Britain’s Ingleby Gallery will showcase work from Richard Forster, Peter Liversidge, Jonathan Owen, Katie Paterson, Callum Innes and Ian Hamilton Finlay.
The exhibitor line-up is accompanied by an extensive public program that includes talks on buying and collecting art, tours, installations and a video exhibition in partnership with Sydney Film Festival. VIP events include artist studio visits, private collection viewings, hosted dinners, panel discussions and behind the scenes access to Sydney’s leading public institutions.
Sydney’s lauded Longrain restaurant has signed on to be the fair’s pop up restaurant, serving up some of its signature South-East Asian cuisine to fair goers.
The fair will be open to the public from Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th September, with a VIP preview on Wednesday 9th September.
