Tony Lloyd: The Distance

Tony Lloyd continues to draw on the aura of anticipation found in cinematic imagery. In this new series he recreates the drama of an apocalyptic film, painting asteroids illuminated by car headlights the moment before they hit earth. Stillness and a timeless beauty emanate from these paintings as the viewer is suspended in the narrow instant, before the distance between present and future is erased. Lloyd describes the experience of driving at night akin to being in the cinema, where one watches an external landscape unfold out of the darkness; “We are all travelling through space. Earth is our vehicle, the orbital path is our highway,” says the artist.
