Warren Vance: Hold On

The inscriptions and images carved on trees are called arborglyphs. Dating back through the centuries, these markings make numerous appearances throughout pastoral literature and Renaissance painting traditions of the 1600s. The preserved carvings speak many words as they deliver an insight into the lives of the past.

Vance has deployed the use of ‘Hans Arp-esque’ rock climbing holds as a lofty metaphor and as a way of measuring the difficulty of lovers obtaining heights of true love. The photos were taken in parks in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney where some carvings may be several decades old. The carvings are slowly eroding; they share the same fate as those who carved them.
