In this exhibition, Melbourne-based artist Asher Milgate enters into conversation with the legacy of Hans Heysen – responding directly to Heysen’s reverence for the eucalyptus landscape and sunlight and what he once described as “The Sun . . . Its Light and Warmth . . . Is My Religion”.
Beginning as test prints – fragile, imperfect, often cast off –, Milgate’s photographs are torn and machine-sewn into new compositions. Not attempting restoration through the stitched seams; instead, the works insist on rupture, fragmentation, and remembrance. A gesture, material and political; time and tension, held in place.
