Against The Odds

Prompted by the recent purchase of an early painting by Melbourne-based artist Helen Maudsley, Against The Odds celebrates the work of women artists held in the State Art Collection with a focus on art made in the 1950s in Australia by over thirty of Maudsley’s contemporaries.

Through innovation and adaptability, these women artists championed modernism by balancing the demands of the private and professional; breaking the traditional male artist mould, selecting domestic subject matter readily to hand, and modifying a washing machine mangle into a printing press.
