‘Objects and Ornithology’ has been born out of the artist’s love of studying both objects and bird life. Mostert’s practice has revolved around still life for many years with her Dutch heritage acting as a drive towards investigating objects and what they mean to us. The exhibition includes oil paintings on linen but also small sculptures as the birds and their collections become collectibles themselves.
Mostert is deeply interested in the notions of collecting. The bowerbird has always intrigued Mostert, particularly their behavior when gathering things to collect their bowers. This body of work is a light-hearted, whimsical look at birds interacting with man made objects. By projecting the human foible of possession and collection onto birds, it may throw up questions about what we value and why.
