Sydney-based painter Deborah Marks’ practice explores the psychological dimensions of the human condition and the ways these inner experiences influence the creative process itself.
In this series, Marks explores the space where multiple possibilities exist before a decision or resolution emerges. Employing traditional techniques to create the illusion of three-dimensional forms and spaces, Marks intentionally disrupts these conventions through abstraction, chance, and accident – as uncertainty, with its fluid and unpredictable nature, becomes both subject and method; the figures in the works embodying tensions between belonging and isolation.
