Denese Oates: Balance

Denese Oates’ sculptures are often a mass of intertwined copper wires fashioned into abstracted organic forms, beautifully constructed and created with their own unique symmetry.

These new works are inspired by Oates’ treks through diverse Australian landscapes – the Goldfields Track in Victoria and the Kimberley region of north-west Australia. Massive boulders, between which resilient weeds frequently emerge, have left an indelible mark on Oates’ artistic sensibilities. Working with various materials, she creates compositions that contemplate the delicate equilibrium between stability and fragility, permanence and transience within our natural world.
