Dhopiya Yunupiŋu: Marwat

Yolŋu artist Dhopiya Yunupiŋu’s work speaks to the pre-colonisation international trade with Indonesia and handed-down memories of boat sails appearing on the horizon, ready for trade in sea cucumbers (trepang) with the Yolŋu people.

This exhibition features new works on bark, part of a series Yunupiŋu initiated in early 2024. Their fine lines made using the marwat or line brush, handcrafted from a few strands of straight hair, usually from a young girl; a distinctive Yolŋu painting apparatus and style, made manifest in its most reductive form.
