Five generations: The strength of Namatjira’s legacy

This latest exhibition provides a colourful history of the Australian landscape by the Hermannsburg School of watercolour artists. Spanning almost eight decades and five generations, the movement led by the father of watercolour painting Albert Namatjira (1902-1959) is still a vibrant force in the art world today.

Featuring key works by Namatjira starting from the mid-1930s, it traces the progression of the watercolour art to the present day. The works collectively celebrate the significance of the watercolour movement; its strength and depth, as well as the multiplicity of perspectives over successive generations. This historical exhibition illustrates the inherent Australian watercolour practice within the movement, responding to the characteristically Australian landscape.
