Lands of Light: Lloyd Rees and Tasmania

This exhibition explores the influence of Tasmania, in particular the Tasmanian light, through the work of Lloyd Rees (1895–1988), who, initially based in Sydney, lived his later years on the island state. The artist found inspiration in the local landscape: the light on the waters of the Derwent River in Hobart, as well as kunanyi/Mount Wellington. A superb painter, draughtsman and printmaker, Rees’ later works are loose and impressionistic, his pastel colour washes capturing the light of the Tasmanian land and environment and demonstrating his skills as a colourist.
