Leonie Watson: Measure

‘Measure’ reflects on Watson’s commute from science to art and back again. It attempts to picture ambivalence, a state of being torn between the appreciation of beautiful disorder and the urge to measure, to categorise, to control.

The notion of chance is explored through watercolour with its range of physical and optical possibilities. The watercolour is used in a non-traditional way, poured and pooled and left to dry. It leaves tidemarks and deep pigment pools. The unpredictable results might suggest stains from bodily fluids, algal growth patterns or perhaps aerial landscapes. Metaphorically, the work represents a state between chaos and control, instinct and rationality.
