Cigdem Aydemir’s night time installation draws a different kind of attention to the Burkini swimsuit designed for Muslim women, a garment which has been admonished in France in particular. The artist notes that the beachwear is subject to “controversy, spurred by notions of cultural difference and safety in times of terror.” Aydemir activates the bodies by styling them as flashing projections that will, literally and metaphorically, highlight the female form and suggest both the feeling of being caught in the act, and mark out the women’s dual presence and absence. ‘SAFE’ is curated by Dr Colin Langridge and displayed in Kelly’s Garden Curated Projects in association with Mona Foma.
