This exhibition comprises recent paintings influenced by John Dent’s extensive studies and travels in Australia and France – featuring intimate interiors, striking portraits, atmospheric still lifes, and evocative landscapes, notably views of Sydney Harbour and Cape Schank. In Dent’s recognisable lyrical style, with their considered compositions and beautiful handling of colour, these atmospheric works transport us to another world, charged with allusions to narrative. There is a sense of conversation in many paintings – how objects relate to each other or how the viewer responds to the suggested narrative.
